When and Where do We Meet?

Members of the South Carolina Upstate Mycological Society meet monthly, except for January, on the first Monday of the month or as the schedule allows.

Check below for specific dates, locations, and speaker information.

Meetings start at 6:30pm, arrive any time after 6:00pm.

The format of the meetings is intended to be casual and social. We typically have a speaker who gives a presentation on a mycological  topic of their choice, and also discuss recent fungal finds,  arrange the upcoming foray, work on identifying specimens, etc.

All levels of knowledge are welcome!

Meeting place: See individual event for location, it changes based on availability.

Upcoming Meetings

Monday, April 6

Aishwarya Veerabahu

Golden Oyster Mushrooms and Invasive Fungi in the Bigger Picture

We all know about invasive plants and animals, but what about invasive fungi?  Many of us know of invasive fungi causing Chestnut Blight and White-Nose  Syndrome, but there are also invasive mushrooms, and, taken together,  invasive fungi are significantly changing our ecosystems and landscapes.  Join me on a tour of invasive fungi, their impacts, and the lessons I've learned from my study species, the invasive golden oyster mushroom. This escaped species hasn’t taken hold in the South yet, so I  hope to learn from you all and develop a plan for stewarding and  protecting the beautiful fungal biodiversity of the South!

Bio:   Aishwarya Veerabahu is a 4th year Botany PhD candidate, studying fungal ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, advised by Dr. Anne Pringle, with a PhD minor in Life Science Communication. She is broadly interested in studying fungal biodiversity, drivers of diversity, cross-kingdom interactions, science communication, and science policy concerning fungi (or the lack thereof). When she’s not doing science, she’s jamming out with her band, Big Slide!

When: Monday, April 6. Join any time after 6:00 pm, meeting starts at 6:30 pm.
